The One of the 99

Recently I have been reflecting on Matthew 18:12: "What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off?"

Many times working at Gracehaven means you are deescalating crisis all day. This girl is having a hard day and wants to run away from it all. This girl is missing her family and tired of feeling stuck in a group home. Or this girl had a really difficult therapy session and wants to take her anger and frustration out on you. These are common scenarios that our youth and staff work through every day.

So often leaving the 99 to find the 1 means stopping what you had planned for your day to just sit and listen to a girl vent. It often means hearing the same story over and over from a girl while she continues to process her thoughts and feelings. It often means having conversations where you don't have answers so you just have to listen and acknowledge their pain. It often means convincing a girl for the 15th time that running away is not going to fix anything. And sometimes it even means staying up until 3:00 in the morning trying to help them.

But Jesus calls us to this. He asks us as shepherds to leave the 99 to find the 1. He Himself is the greatest example of this. Does this mean it's easy? NO! Does this mean it's enjoyable? NO! But are we called to do this? YES!

Please pray with me for the staff who are with these girls day in and day out…having hard conversations that they don't always have the answers to…losing sleep because they are trying to help the 1.

And pray for our girls…that they would truly know how much they are loved and valued! They are the 1 that Jesus would leave the 99 to find.
